Move over, self-care.

UBC psychology researchers found that performing simple daily acts of kindness — like sending an encouraging text or offering a bus seat — reduced loneliness more effectively than self-care.
The effect was most substantial for people starting with higher levels of loneliness or social anxiety. Kindness toward “weak ties” such as neighbours or coworkers proved particularly powerful, creating more opportunities for meaningful interaction.
“Kindness shifts the focus outward. That makes it a practical, approachable action.”
— Dr. Yeeun Archer Lee, Assistant Professor of Psychology
