A University of Toronto Engineering-led study uses modelling to show that the housing-first approach can significantly reduce addiction and homelessness rates.

A new study led by University of Toronto Engineering researchers provides evidence that the Housing First model, which prioritizes immediate access to stable housing, can be an effective way to address addiction and homelessness.
Using mathematical modelling, the team found that providing housing without preconditions not only stabilizes lives but also increases the odds of long-term recovery for people living with addiction. The study suggests that such policies can benefit both individuals and society by breaking cycles of instability.
“Our study shows that the Housing First model not only benefits individuals but also leads to improved outcomes for society as a whole.”
