Data centres are now considered critical infrastructure, supporting everything from scientific research and health care to financial services and sovereign AI ambitions.

The country’s new data centre framework includes: local benefits, electricity costs, environmental impact, potential negative local impacts, and strategic Canadian value.

AI sovereignty begins with owning the infrastructure for data storage and compute, so the country is not beholden to other (more powerful) nations. The government’s new principles aim to drive ethical development and data use, and big AI tech has signed on.

Corporate signatories on Canada’s announced principles include the likes of Amazon Web Services, Anthropic, Cohere, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

A McGill team of researchers has found evidence that cannabis legalization has both positive and negative public health outcomes.

The global review of 176 studies spanning 30 years found that cannabis legalization could reduce the use of substances like alcohol and opioids, but cannabis-related emergency room visits also increased.

Waterloo researchers have developed a new 3D-printed electrode that could make storing wind and solar energy both easier and safer.

Because these energy sources are “intermittent,” they require storage technology that can return the energy to the grid later. The engineering team’s design allows the battery liquid to move more efficiently, improving chemical reactions and energy release.

Cleaner mining: Common clay traps mine waste

Researchers at USask collaborated with Canadian Light Source Industry Services to isolate ways to prevent environmental leaching from coal and metal mining.

When exposed to air and water, mining waste can release nickel into the surrounding environment, which can be toxic to plants, fish, and people. The researchers found that kaolinite, a common clay, acts like a “sponge” to “trap” the metal in wastewater.

“How could these findings be applied in the real world? Blanchard says that, in theory, a mining company that is trying to safely contain nickel could flow mine-affected water through a ‘filter’ containing clay with a specific pH.”

A team of U of T researchers has developed a novel disease therapy that could one day treat a wide range of genetic diseases caused by RNA mutations. The team notes that their research could be used to develop a new drug class to treat a wide range of related genetic diseases.

“There are so many types of disease-causing mutations — many affecting only a small number of people — that developing a separate gene therapy for every individual mutation is extremely challenging…. To preserve memory after a night of sleeplessness, either a nap or short workout can do the trick. That’s a recent finding from a research team led by McGill, examining participants who either did 20 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise or took a 90-minute nap. Both groups did 22% better on a memory test.

Led by Waterloo researchers and FAR.AI, an international research team has found that the safety mechanisms in 21 leading open-weight LLMs can be removed fairly easily. “When the safety guardrails are stripped out of a capable model, it can be used at scale for harm in ways a single person could never manage manually…. Rather than focusing on milder mental health concerns, a new study suggests that focusing on more intense mental health issues among youth could have the biggest benefit on society.

Analyzing the program ACCESS Open Minds, the team found that the program “saved the public health-care system an average of $4,355 per patient annually, or nearly $10 for every dollar invested.”

After completing the program, participants were found to require fewer services than those who received traditional treatment.

Researchers at the University of Alberta are developing polymer fillings that could disinfect their own surfaces under pressure. Their goal is to make restorations last longer and resist new decay. What to know about heat and health

UBC researchers are warning that extreme heat can limit cognition, increase aggressive and high-risk behaviour as blood shifts away from the brain to cool the body.

The researchers add that some medications like antidepressants, blood-pressure drugs, and cholesterol-lowering treatments can interfere with the body's cooling mechanisms.

Most heat-related deaths occur at home among isolated individuals with underlying conditions, making it imperative to recognize early warning signs: confusion, headaches, and rapid pulse.

Unfortunately, fans may actually worsen dehydration in very hot indoor temperatures.

Custom 3D-printed contact lenses in 20 mins

University of Waterloo researchers have developed a platform that combines new silicone materials with advanced 3D printing technology to produce custom contact lenses in 20 minutes.

Their software designs lenses with inner surfaces that match the patient's cornea and outer surfaces that provide vision correction. The findings will particularly help patients with irregularly shaped corneas who currently use rigid lenses and have to make multiple appointments over weeks or months. Their findings could pave the way for specialized lenses to be designed, manufactured, and dispensed during a single visit to an optometrist.

The technology recently received a Gold Medal at the Shanghai International Exhibition of Inventions in June 2026.
